Design Process
Throughout your project, I will be personally involved in every step of the design process. I offer comprehensive architectural design services, from pre-design through construction administration.
My process begins in Pre-Design, with an initial meeting to discuss the requirements of your project. The overall scope, goals, and budget will be established. I will perform a building/zoning code review and site analysis. If necessary, I will measure, verify, and document the existing conditions. At the end of this phase, the overall parameters that impact the design will be determined.
Schematic Design is the conceptual design phase of the project, where sketches are prepared and then presented for client review. Drawings at this phase typically include a site plan, floor plans, and exterior elevations; which are accurate to the nearest foot. Client input is very important, so we will discuss your feedback and thoughtfully implement it into the design. This process may naturally involve one or two additional reviews. The result will establish the basic design direction, size, shape, and form of the project.
Once the design direction is defined, the Design Development begins. In this phase, I will refine and modify the drawings, and sizes will be resolved to the nearest inch. Structural and mechanical systems, building materials, interior and exterior finishes, and other essential decisions will be made. Additional professional design consultants may be involved and their work will be coordinated into the design.
The next phase is Construction Documentation, where I will incorporate a higher level of technical information into the drawings. A typical set of construction drawings includes a site plan, foundation plan, floor plans, roof plan, framing plans, exterior elevations, door & window schedules, wall sections, and details. These drawings will be computer-generated to provide a high level of accuracy and consistency. These drawings will be submitted for a building permit, as required. The general contractor will use these documents to build your new home, addition, or renovation.
Construction Administration takes place during construction. In this phase I will update construction documents, provide supplementary drawings, review shop drawings, and coordinate with manufacturers; as needed. I will also perform periodic site visits, which provide the opportunity to ensure conformance with the design intent and resolve any design issues that may arise on-site.
